The first indigenous religious congregation for women, the Congregation of Mother of Carmel (CMC), was founded on 13 February 1866 by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara with the collaboration of an Italian Carmelite Missionary Rev. Fr. Leopold Boccaro, the then papal delegate. The charism of CMC is holiness through the blending of contemplation and action and redeeming development of women and children. Today we have 20 provinces,2 vice provinces and 4 regions inside and outside Kerala with 6500 members. In 1972 Mgr Paulinose Jeerakath CMI, the then Exarch of Jagdalpur Exarchate, invited the sisters of Jaya Matha Province, Palai to render their service in the mission in Bastar. The pioneer missionary sisters reached Kirandul on 23 June 1972and the firstCMCConvent was opened there. In the long run the CMC in Jagdalpur flourished as a region in 1998 and now with 60 members and 11 Convents she is expanding her services through various apostolates including village development programs, dispensaries, Clinics, boarding ministry, vocational training centers and schools.
